How would you like to manage a team with more star players than you can play? It wouldn't be an easy chore. That's the dilemma facing the two managers at the annual Major League Baseball All-Star classic -- how to get all the talented All-Stars in the game. McAndrew Selected NL's Best Pitcher
New York Mets starter Jim McAndrew has collected the National League Pitcher of the Month award for a run of lights-out performances.
"This town really appreciates it when you're going well," said McAndrew. "They might boo you when you're getting knocked around, but they love you when you're mowin' them down."
In May the 26-year-old compiled a 6-0 record in 6 starts with a 1.38 ERA. He threw 52 innings, fanning 29 while walking 10.
So far this year, McAndrew has 10 wins and 1 loss and a 2.14 ERA.
Expos No Match for McAndrew, Mets in 9-0 Thumping
Jim McAndrew held the Montreal Expos to 1 hit and fashioned a fine 9-0 shutout at Jarry Park.
Speaking after the game, New York Mets manager Gil Hodges said "McAndrew had everything going for him today. He changed speeds effectively, stayed down, had a lot of movement. He was masterful."
McAndrew rung up 6 strikeouts and surrendered 2 walks in the game.
"We couldn't get anything going. He certainly had our number," Montreal manager <Gene Mauch:coach#15> told reporters.
This season, McAndrew has compiled a 8-1 mark, 2.05 ERA and made 9 starts.
