Davis Hittin' on All Cylinders

Getting 5 hits in a game is no easy feat, but doing it to hit for the cycle is even more rare.

Willie Davis of the Los Angeles Dodgers pulled it off at Three Rivers Stadium, going 5-for-6 against the Pittsburgh Pirates. His batting escapades sparked the Dodgers to a win, 9-2.

Davis tallied 5 runs and drove in 2 during the game. Hitting for the cycle is particularly rare because of the different skills required - enough power for a home run, enough speed for a triple and enough patience at the plate to see at least four hittable balls.

"It just happened," Davis said to reporters after the win. "Must have been fate or something, I wasn't expecting it. Heck, I wasn't even really trying for it."

Willie Davis singled in the 1st, hit an RBI triple in the 2nd, singled in the 4th, doubled in the 6th, flied out in the 7th and hit a solo-shot off Orlando Pena in the 9th.

This season, Davis has delivered 70 hits in 224 at-bats for a .312 average with 4 home runs. He is getting on base at a .339 clip and his totals also include 20 RBIs and 37 runs scored. This year Davis has played in 52 games.

Big Day for Davis: Swats 5 Hits

Los Angeles Dodgers center fielder Willie Davis had a day to remember at Three Rivers Stadium, ripping apart the Pittsburgh Pirates and sparking the 9-2 Dodgers win.

Davis wrote his name in the record books with a 5-hit barrage, finishing his special day 5-for-6.

"I'm usually a first ball hitter," Davis told BNN reporters in the postgame press conference. "I think pitchers think batters are going to let the first one go by. I never do. I've always found that it's better to pull the trigger early in the count. Pitchers get real nasty when they get ahead of you, so I try to avoid it."

Willie Davis singled in the 1st, hit an RBI triple in the 2nd, singled in the 4th, doubled in the 6th, flied out in the 7th and hit a solo-shot off Orlando Pena in the 9th.

Thus far this year, Davis is batting .312 with 4 home runs, 20 RBIs and 37 runs scored.
