Raleigh-Durham Announces Brandt Will Retire

Jackie Brandt is hanging up his spikes at the end of the season.

Brandt, a 36-year-old veteran, told the Raleigh-Durham Triangles that he will be retiring.

"I loved playing a kid's game and getting paid well to do it. I loved the travel and the attention ballplayers get," he said. "But, what I'm really going to miss are a lot of the little things that go on behind the scenes. I'm going to miss playing on perfectly mowed grass each day. That's our stage, and a bunch of anonymous groundskeepers made that happen each week."

The native of Omaha, Nebraska showed an obvious love for the game as he reflected on the sport.

"My bat representative ... I would talk to him and next thing I'd have brand new bats. I loved the perfectly straight chalk lines, the echoes from the PA system, and even the umps."

In his career, Brandt has accumulated a .262 batting average with 1020 hits. His totals include 175 doubles, 37 triples, 112 home runs, 574 strikeouts, 540 runs scored, 485 RBIs and a lifetime .323 OBP.

CARL's Star Player Named

Few players his age are still in the league, but Jackie Brandt of the Raleigh-Durham Triangles clearly loves the game and clearly he can still get the job done. Last week the 35-year-old right fielder hit the ball with the consistency of someone ten years younger, which made Brandt a popular and well-deserved selection as Carolina League Player of the Week.

He paced the Triangles attack by putting up a .500 batting average, 10 hits in 20 at-bats, 1 RBIs and 1 home run. Brandt also scored 4 runs.

This season, Brandt is batting .386 with 22 hits and 2 home runs. He has scored 8 times and has 8 RBI.
