Padres-Yankees Swap: Spiezio for Velez
BNN has learned the San Diego Padres have reportedly worked out a deal with the New York Yankees. Sources close to the Padres indicated that a trade has been reached in principle where 19-year old minor league CF Otto Velez, 21-year old minor league 1B John Ellis, 23-year old minor league RHP Tom Buskey, 23-year old minor league 3B Rick Bladt, and 24-year old minor league RHP Dale Spier will be swapped to San Diego with 28-year old 3B Ed Spiezio and 19-year old minor league SS Gil Vidrio heading to New York. Neither organization would comment on the report, saying it was club policy not to speak about a trade until it was finalized.
For the season, Spiezio is currently batting .289 with 11 home runs and 33 RBIs. In 84 games he has reached base at a .368 rate and scored 40 runs to date.
San Diego, New York Talks Intensifying
The San Diego Padres have been engaged in discussions with the New York Yankees about making a trade. Some issue has apparently kept San Diego from sealing the deal. Insiders report, however, that both sides seem determined to work out their differences.
San Diego is 28-56 through 84 games. New York has a record of 52-32.

The Kinston Eagles stopped the Lynchburg Twins by a score of 4-3 at Grainger Stadium, with the lion's share of the credit going to center fielder Otto Velez. The 19-year-old had a career day, collecting 5 hits.
"Every batter wants to have a quality at-bat every time he steps up to the plate," Velez said later. "He wants to hit the ball hard."

"Not much that I can say," offered Lynchburg manager <David Yochum:coach#581>. "He just hammered the heck out of us."
