Banks Gets 500th Home Run

"I wasn't trying to hit a homer. I just wanted to make contact."

That's what Ernie Banks told reporters after he made league history at Three Rivers Stadium. The prolific slugger belted home run #500 in the Chicago Cubs 6-5 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The standout first baseman collected 1 hit in 6 at-bats with 1 RBI and 1 run scored.

"I guess this puts me in baseball's elite," said Banks. "I don't feel any different. I probably should, but I don't. Still, it is a nice achievement. I did get a little excited, didn't I?"

Banks has chalked up a career batting average of .276 with 2529 hits, 500 homers and 1596 RBIs.
