NL Presents Player of the Week Trophy
Montreal sports fans can't stop singing the praises of Bob Bailey, who has been selected the National League Player of the Week.
Bailey was in a comfort zone all week, finishing with a .406 average (13-for-32), 10 RBIs and 6 home runs.
This season, Bailey is batting .306 with 28 home runs. His totals include 85 RBIs and 69 runs scored.
Howard Out-Powers Competition
It was "bombs away!" at RFK Stadium, host to the 1970 Home Run Challenge. When all was said and done, Frank Howard prevailed over an impressive lineup of sluggers. The Washington Senators left fielder out-homered Bob Bailey in the final round by a score of 10-7.
"It might look easy, hitting batting practice pitches," said Howard. "But it's harder than it looks."
Howard has a lifetime .274 batting average and .348 on-base percentage in his 1477-game career with 1409 hits and 314 home runs.

3 Bombs for Bob Bailey
It was a day for the record books for Montreal Expos third baseman Bob Bailey, who walloped three out of Wrigley Field against the Cubs. However, not even a three-homer game could prevent the Cubs from getting the 9-6 victory.
"We threw some good pitches and they hit 'em, and we made some bad pitches and they hit 'em. That's a good strategy for losing ballgames," Montreal skipper Gene Mauch joked after the loss.
Bailey still had a few opportunities to celebrate along the way. He was 3-for-4 for the day, batting in 4 runs and scoring 3 times.
"I never, ever thought I would hit three home runs," Bailey said. "I hit three home runs once when I was 12 in Little League and I thought that was going to be the last time."
Bob Bailey hit a solo-shot off Dave Lemonds in the 2nd, hit a solo-shot off Dave Lemonds in the 4th, grounded out in the 6th and hit a two-run home run off Boots Day in the 9th.
So far in 1970 Bailey is batting .310 with 27 home runs, 82 RBIs and 64 runs scored. He has 89 hits in 287 at-bats and a .438 OBP.
