Sanguillen Rips St. Louis for 5 Hits

5 hits in a game is a rare thing, but Pittsburgh's Manny Sanguillen made it happen against the Cardinals. Everything came together at the plate for the 26-year-old catcher as he collected 5 hits in 5 at-bats -- and helped the Pirates triumph, 9-7, at Three Rivers Stadium.

"I'm just out there to try and help the team win," Sanguillen said after the game, "I had some real good at-bats. I made good, solid contact and luckily no one caught 'em."

Manny Sanguillen singled in the 2nd, singled in the 4th, hit an RBI single in the 5th, singled in the 7th and hit an RBI single in the 8th.

On the season, Sanguillen is batting .385 with 3 home runs and 32 RBIs. He has played in 65 games.

NL Awards Player of the Week Trophy

It was some kind of week for Manny Sanguillen of the Pittsburgh Pirates. First he hits the heck out of the ball, ripping it at a .600 clip and the next thing you know, he is voted the Player of the Week in the National League. Last week Sanguillen went 12-for-20, chalked up 1 home run and 6 RBIs and scored 7 runs. Not a bad week's work at all.

Sanguillen is hitting .379 in 1970 with 27 RBIs and 3 home runs.
